The Bush Poet

We were delighted to have John Hayes from WA Bush Poets and his wife Anne join us for a reading this morning. John recited four poems, the first by none other than Banjo Patterson and a couple of Johns own. Thank you to John for bringing a different element to our meeting this morning.

As well as this, Matt practised the Best Man speech he will be reading at a friends wedding in a few short weeks and David taught us all a thing or two about Structures in his demonstration speech.

Enjoy your fortnight everyone!

A Live Prop

Our meetings are always full of life. However last Wednesdays meeting was a little bit different, with the addition of Lesley's pet Greyhound 'Tommy'.

Tommy was adopted by Lesley and her partner John 6 months ago from H.A.R.T, a volunteer organisation dedicated to rescuing homeless and abused animals. During Lesley's speech we were shocked to learn that each year, approximately 20,000 Greyhounds are born for no other purpose than to race and win. However of these young and healthy Greyhound pups at least 17,000 are discarded and killed without ever making it to the racing track and only 500 are adopted. With Spring Racing Carnivals hotting up, Lesley's speech was a timely reminder to re-think a visit to the Greyhound's.

We also had a phenomenal speech by Rob, which lead us through his appreciation of Art.

Chris gave us an insight into his world with his Icebreaker speech. Well done Chris, what a fantastic way to start your Toastmasters journey.

We look forward to seeing you all at our next meeting!

Humorous & Table Topics Comp

Well done to our two Humorous Speech competitors, Gabe and Peter. You both had the whole meeting in stitches with your cheeky speeches.

Unfortunately there can only be one winner and that winner was Gabe Alves, with his speech detailing the benefits of sitting next to him on a plane. Congratulations Gabe!

Gabe & Peter
All three of our fierce table topics competitors Alison, Rob and Dietmar answered the question "If you could invite anyone (dead or alive) to a BBQ, who would you invite?". However, it was Alison who took out the prize for the best response. Congratulations Alison, I am sure you had everyone in the meeting hoping they were the 'buddy' you'd invite to your BBQ along with Rowan Atkinson and Evonne Goolagong!

Dietmar, Rob & Alison
Just quietly, we're all still very intrigued about the antics that would occur at Robs BBQ, with Tina Turner and Freddie Mercury invited!

Jam Packed July

Our second meeting in July was absolutely jam packed.

We were lucky enough to have a very special guest, Peter Law who upon winning the International Speech Competition, was kind enough to come and show us how it's done!

Here is an action shot of Peter performing his award winning speech 'The World needs more Bricklayers'.

It's no wonder he won! The judges must have been terrified! ;)
As well as this, Maree delivered an Educational speech on Contest Judging, as preparation for our Humorous and Table Topics Competition next meeting. If you would like to nominate yourself as a contestant for this competition, please contact Jesse Channell via email (jessiechannell@gmail.com). Remember, as Maree stated you don't necessarily have to be a 'funny' person - it's all about your delivery!

We learned a great deal about David Boyle as he delivered his Icebreaker speech this morning. Who would have thought it was his first speech?! Well done David, you are a natural.

Our other David, David Fisher posed the question 'Is the Mining Boom really over?' in an informative speech titled 'A new Venture'.

Our final speaker for the day was Gavin, who gave us some extremely valuable driving tips, complete with Lynette as his 'crash test dummy'. We learned to brace for impact with bent arms and legs, always stay 5 seconds behind the car in front and to always be aware of your surroundings.

We wave goodbye to Lynette for 10 weeks as she travels through Europe. Enjoy your trip Lynette, we look forward to hearing all about it upon your return.

See you all bright and early on the 30th of July.

We had three inspirational speakers today; Gabe entertained us with "One more chocolate" his first speech after finishing his CC manual; Jessie delivered a powerful message in "Put down your camera" and Doug gave us an impressive icebreaker speech about speed dating!

We look forward to the next meeting on the 21st of May, where we will no doubt be delighted with some fantastic speeches.
